09.09.2021 – 20.11.2021

On September 9th, Lucía Mendoza gallery presents The sea was dressed in feathers and the ice was painted red, an exhibition by the Chilean artist Josefina Guilisasti curated by Christian Viveros-Fauné with which the gallery participates in the 12th edition of Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend 2021, the artistic event that opens the exhibition season.

Based on the book El rey de la Patagonia, by the writer José Luis Alonso, and the artist’s own travels, the proposal by Josefina Guilisasti and Christian Viveros-Fauné proposes a dialogue between history, anthropology, geography or crafts and uses a historical fact as inspiration: the massacre, narrated in Alonso’s book, in 1592 of about 20,000 penguins off the coast of Puerto Deseado, in Argentina, at the hands of the English captain John Davis and the crew of his ship, Desire.
